POSITION PURPOSE:

The Director of Engineering, Television is responsible for keeping KSL TV 5 operating smoothly by planning and executing engineering strategy, managing the TV engineering team and ensuring that engineering tasks and projects are accomplished with a high degree of excellence.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure that the technical facilities of Bonneville International Salt Lake TV operate at the highest quality within required guidelines and within the established budget.
  • Provide daily management and supervision to the Television Broadcast Engineers.
  • Manage the transmitters, studio facilities, their property, and their support equipment, i.e.; HVAC, generators and large building UPS systems.

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience managing an Engineering department at a TV station.
  • Experience managing and monitoring capital and operations budgets for TV Engineering.
  • Proven experience in managing on-air operations in a leadership role including equipment, personnel and technology systems in production environments and field operations.
  • The ability to manage multiple projects and employees with different skills and job functions.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and complete them in a fast-paced deadline driven environment.
  • Ensure that broadcast equipment is maintained and operates within broadcast standards and guidelines provided by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and other regulatory agencies by developing, scheduling, performing, and supervising routine, preventive, and emergency maintenance of technical equipment located in the studio and at transmitter sites.
  • Assure high quality broadcasts by recommending the purchase of equipment, parts, and supplies as needed, assuring that purchases are within the constraints of the operating budget, developing plans for the installation of new and replacement equipment, and creating technical plans and wiring diagrams, as needed.
  • Proven experience in managing on-air operations in a leadership role including equipment, personnel and technology systems management in production environments as well as field operations.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and employees with different skills and job functions.
  • Experience developing and monitoring capital and operations budgets. 
  • Ability to communicate and implement excellent customer service.  Must be able to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers and general public.
  • Skill in using a variety of test equipment, hand tools and computers.  Understands the operation, maintenance, and repair of broadcast equipment.
  • Must be able to troubleshoot, diagnose and handle the tools necessary to repair studio/post production equipment.
  • Must have solid working knowledge of PC and Apple computers, MS Windows, OSX and related software.
  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university or equivalent. 
  • Must have a mature sense of judgment and ability to prioritize.
  • Contributes to the continued success of KSLTV by performing all other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participate in and actively support Bonneville's EEO policy as it relates to recruitment, selection, evaluation, compensation, training, promotion and termination.  Includes being knowledgeable and conversant with the FCC EEO Rules effective March 10, 2003, and understanding the compliance issues that safeguard the station's FCC license.  
  • Take a proactive role in supporting Bonneville's policy to prevent harassment of any kind within the workplace, at off-site places of company business and at company-sponsored social venues.
  • Assure that employees working in your department will receive annual performance appraisals.  Guarantee that employees will sign Conflict of Interest and Payola annually.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Occasional long hours may be required for maintenance or repair of equipment and transmission facilities.
  • Substantial physical movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Must be able to lift and move heavy equipment weighing up to 50 pounds on a weekly basis, assisting others or using devices to move heavier objects on an occasional basis.
  • Must have vision correctable to read test equipment meters and gauges as well as sufficient mobility and coordination to operate hand tools.
  • Must maintain valid driver's license, including the ability to drive trucks and other station vehicles.
  • Must be able to receive, process, and maintain information through oral and/or written communication effectively.
